Christmastime often brings feelings of joy, warmth, love and connection. For Michelle Schermer who had spent much of her life facing struggles, one Christmas in particular marked a turning point—a season of healing and hope.. “I’ll never forget that Christmas in 2006,” Michelle shared, her voice filled with emotion.
Having been released from jail the previous fall, Michelle was taking it one step at a time to rebuild her life. She attributes much of her recovery to her Hand UP for Women mentor, Brenda Kerns, who became a lifelong friend and source of support.
A Special Christmas Tradition
Brenda invited Michelle into her home that Christmas, where a large, beautiful tree stood—untouched, waiting to be decorated. Brenda turned to Michelle with a smile and said, “Have at it!”
“It was surreal and very special that she allowed me to come into her home and she trusted me,” Michelle said, reflecting on the moment. Although placing ornaments on the tree seemed like a small task, it symbolized something much larger: a new beginning. The tree, which Michelle decorated with care, was brought to life, just as her own life was being restored.
The pair shared an emotional moment, realizing that both were undergoing a profound transformation. Brenda had invited Michelle into her life, just as Michelle was learning to embrace a fresh start. As Brenda put it, “It was a turning point for both of us.”
A Life Marked by Struggles and Survival
Michelle’s journey wasn’t easy. “I was a thief and a drug addict,” she admitted. Growing up, Michelle was molested by a family member, which led her down a path of addiction. “I never thought I had a problem until I had a problem,” Michelle explained. Her addiction to crack cocaine began when she was 30 years old in 2000, and it quickly spiraled out of control. “It took me down quickly; I lost everything.”
After going to jail, Michelle knew it was time to make a change. Following her release from drug court, she found Hand UP for Women, a support organization that played a critical role in her recovery.
Mentorship and Unwavering Support
“Eva knew what she was doing when she paired me with Brenda,” Michelle said, referring to the Hand UP coordinator who matched her with her mentor. “We text every day, and she has been one of my biggest supporters.”
Consistent accountability is the cornerstone of Michelle and Brenda’s relationship, even to this day. Every day, Brenda would text and ask, “Are you making good choices today?” This allowed no room for excuses and built the trust they still share today.
Hand UP for Women gave Michelle a sense of purpose again. “They’re my extended family,” she shared. Over a decade has passed since Michelle graduated from the program, but she and Brenda’s bond remains as strong as ever.
Brenda has become a constant source of encouragement and support for Michelle, who calls her “my person.” While Michelle’s mom lives in Florida, Brenda, based in Knoxville, is nearby to offer the extra support Michelle needs.
The Gift of Encouragement
Every day, Brenda sends Michelle words of encouragement, filling a void in Michelle’s life that had once been so empty. The Christmas they shared together remains one of the most transformative experiences for both women, solidifying a friendship and bond that would last a lifetime.
